The guidelines I apply when using other people's work to complement or support my own position on an issue or thesis, is to share information for educational purposes only with an explanation if needed or without an explanation & fall pretty much within MIT's parameters:

For example, I do not quote more than a total of 500 words from someone else's work, nor do the quoted words I use amount to more than 5 percent of someone else's work nor make up more than 5 percent of My Work, apart from "common knowledge" or "common sense" & if they do it's for educational completeness only. ..
